Track a Fake Facebook Account

Did someone steal your identity and create a fake account at Facebook.com? The only way to track the person on Facebook is to track their original location via IP address. To get that address, you have to use some imagination, some verbal skills and a sweet little note that will assure you that he or she is going to answer it through an email client. Tracking the IP address of an email sender does require looking at some technical details. But it is not hard if you know where to look for information after you gain an exact IP address.

Steps

  1. Contact the fake account holder in question. Add them to your friends list and get them to contact you via mail. You might find this a bit challenging, but if you would like to track the person who is duplicating your account and stealing your business, this might be the only way to save your reputation. If you thought of contacting Facebook, their Help Center and Support team aren't going to offer you anything.
  2. Log into your account (Gmail, Yahoo Mail or Hotmail) and open the email which you received from your "friend".
  3. Click the down arrow which should be available alongside the reply button. From the drop down menu, choose "Show Original".

  4. Look for the lines of text that start with “Received: from". You should find several of them in the message header because the message header contains the IP addresses of all of servers involved in routing that email to you. It is the same case with re-routers. The IP Address of the person who sent you the mail should probably be the one that is farthest down.
  5. If you are having trouble finding the IP of the original sender, navigate to the bottom of this page: http://aruljohn.com/info/howtofindipaddress/. Paste the message header in the input box. The script will automatically detect the IP and report it back to you.
  6. Track the location of the IP address. The IP address contains information of position of the sender, and if it violates your privacy or well being, you are free to hire an investigator for a case of serious cyber bullying. You can track your person X by performing a location lookup on the IP address by several online tools.[1]

Warnings

  • The person who stole your identity might not be your friend making a mock of you, and in most cases it is not just some kid making a joke. It is highly possible that he too has found who you are in the same way. So, if you are sure that someone has ripped you off, find some professional help rather than doing something stupid in haste and ignorance.

Things You'll Need
