Trifle is an easy dessert to make, it has endless variations, but it looks beautiful and is a great thing to serve at parties! It's often eaten in Britain.
Ingredients
A large sponge cake or some ladyfingers
Jam or jelly
Pudding, custard or curd
Fruit
Mince
Liqueur of your choice (optional)
Whipped cream (optional)
Steps
Take a wide bowl, preferably glass so the layers can be seen through the sides. Plastic or metal will also work, but don't use wood.
Cut up the fruit. If you're using liqueur, pour some of it over the fruit and let it sit in the refrigerator for at least an hour.
Cut the cake or ladyfingers into pieces. Layer them on the bottom of the bowl so most of the bottom is covered. Make sure you have some pieces left over.
If you're using liqueur, pour it over the cake so it's all soaked, and let it rest for a few minutes.
Spoon a layer of custard over the cake pieces, distributing it as evenly as possible (it doesn't have to be perfect).
Layer the chopped fruit over the custard.
Add more cake pieces.
Add a layer of mince
Add a layer of jam.
Continue adding layers until you've reached the top of the bowl.
Decorate the top with whipped cream and any fruit and cake pieces you have left.
When it's time to serve the trifle, get a big spoon to scoop it with and give everybody a bowl. Enjoy!
